Pony wasn’t sure what it was, exactly, but something was tickling at the back of his head, an instinct that told him there was something amiss.

There seemed to be a lot of weirdness going on lately. The strange bruise on Piper’s chest, that looked nothing like a bruise from a Krav Maga punch like she’d claimed. The mystery motorcycle rider he and Wyatt had chased in the aftermath of the bank robbery. The news about an undercover FBI agent being in the area.

And now, Piper acting all squirrely and awkward, nowhere near the grinning, confident firecracker he was used to.

Something about what she’d said didn’t sit right with Pony. Not so much what she’d said, but how she’d said it. Fumbling, stuttering, like she was reaching for the words while she was saying them.

More to chase away those thoughts than anything else, Pony walked behind the bar, stooped down, and looked around where he’d found Piper. Bottles, rags, glasses… nothing that would suggest anything out of the ordinary.

“What are you doing back there?”

The sudden voice pushing into his thoughts made him jump slightly and he almost hit his head on the bar as he stood up to see who was talking.

“Hunh?” he said. “Oh, hey Devil. I… nothing.”

“Nothing?” Devil said. “Well, nothing me up a bottle of beer while you’re at it.”

“Sure. Here.”

“Oh, here we go,” Devil said, rolling his eyes.

“What?”

“You. You’re brooding.”

“I’m not brooding,” Pony said.

“You’re brooding.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Thinking,” Devil said with a groan. “Even worse. Thinking about what?”

Pony picked his words carefully. “What do you do if you think someone might not be who you think they are?”

“What do you mean? Like a double life?” Devil said, his eyes suddenly getting bright and excited as he continued. “Like a secret agent? Like Batman?”

“No, not… damn it, Devil,” Pony said. “I’m trying to be serious, here.”

“That’s your problem, dude. I mean, like, consistently, that’s your problem. You’re always so serious.”

“Some things are serious.”

“Eh,” Devil said with a shrug. “Shit has a tendency of working itself out. Look at me. I constantly get into all kinds of shit that should’ve got me killed a long time ago. But here I am.”

Pony thought about that for a second. “Can’t say you’re entirely wrong about that last part.”

“Look, dude,” Devil said. “Life is simple. As long as you’ve got the brothers with you, what else do you need? Well, that, and as long as your dick still works.”

“I’d say you’ve been helpful, but I’d never lie to you,” Pony said.

“Thanks, dude,” Devil said. “Hey, wait.”

“Come on,” Pony said, before Devil could come up with a response. “Benny’s waiting on us.”

The two of them had barely made it through the door to Benny’s little room over the bar when the computer genius began to holler at them.

“No, no, no, no!” he shouted. “My space! My space! We agreed to have an agreement and this is my space! No strangers allowed.”

Devil said, “Dude. We aren’t strangers.”

“You aren’t,” Benny said. “You aren’t. But him.”

“Him?” Devil said, looking around in confusion until his eyes settled on Pony.
